5 Creative Games to Improve Your Child’s Listening Skills
We know that kids are prone to easily getting distracted. With these creative games, we hope to improve your little one’s ability to listen closely and pay attention to detail.
This is a simple game that can be played anywhere, anytime! Ask your kids to listen intently to statements you’re about to make. If it’s a nice statement like “everyone gets chocolate!”, they say “yay”! If it’s not so nice, like “no watching TV for a month”, they say “nay”. You can make it difficult for more older kids by asking them to say “yay” if you mention an adjective, and “nay” if you mention a noun, etc.
Get, Set, Go!
Move over, ‘Simon Says’! Here’s a similar game that could be even more fun. Ask your kids to follow all your instructions – but the catch is, they need to wait until you say “go”. To make this game more challenging, you could leave a longer gap between your instruction and saying “go”!
What’s On Your Shopping List?
This game improves your child’s listening skills and memory! Make an imaginary “shopping list” and start the game saying “I went to the shop today and bought…” (food, groceries, books, anything at all). The next child continues by saying the previous item and adding their own item to this shopping list.
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
Make a list of true or false statements and read them out to your kids. They will have to listen carefully and decide on the validity of the statement. If it’s true, they give a thumbs up! If it’s false, a thumbs down. For example, if you say “I have purple hair” and it’s not true, they need to give a thumbs down! You could make this game more difficult by using mathematical statements or geography statements, etc.
Draw What I Describe
As the name of this simple game suggests, all you need to do is describe an image for your kids to draw. This would require them to be as attentive as possible and listen very closely to what you’re describing. Once they’re done, you could maybe play Osmo’s Masterpiece (an interactive drawing game) together!
You could incorporate these creative games into your daily routine and your kids won’t even realize they’re improving their listening skills!
